Figured I'd ask you this'n, seeing as you're a chemist type person...

Do you know any way to measure or monitor the ionization flow within the electrolyte of a lead-acid battery? Or not necessarily the flow, but the state of it? We're basically trying to find a way to monitor the cell itself, if we can, to be able to tell if a battery is charging, without having to measure current coming in or out.

Got any chemical know-how love for me here?

Even though electrons don't ordinarily swim, the movement of ions in solution, due to charging the battery or to drawing current from the battery, should generate a magnetic field. In principle, you should be able to detect the field from outside the battery. You don't need a tricorder. :P
